When the Order of Saint Augustine purchased ground for a college in
1841, their first concern was to place it under suitable patronage. The first
Augustinian Province in America had been dedicated to Saint Thomas of Villanova,
and it was decided that the college should share in this privilege. So it was
thus the first Augustinian College in America was named Villanova College.
Thomas was a person who was used to operating by reason, one who was comfortable
with the poser of his intellect. He was respected for his leadership abilities.
Thomas was a visionary, a practical person, yet deeply spiritual. He continually
sought to follow the example that Christ had set for the world. He made himself
available to others at all times.
Today, four centuries since his ordination, Thomas is remembered and honored,
not so much for his intellect, nor for his strong administrative skills, nor
even for his inspiring sermons, but for his simple sharing and his deep concern
for the poor and the oppressed. Thomas once said, "one thing alone I can call my
own-the obligation to distribute to by brethren the possessions with which God
has entrusted me."
The Saint Thomas of Villanova Alumni Medal, the highest honor bestowed by the
