In Search of the Trojan War
Call Number: VT 262
Length: 50 minutes, 6 volumes, VHS, color
Distributor: BBC 1985
Homer's tale of the siege of Troy has gripped the imagination for
more than 3000 years. Are the stories of the Wooden Horse and the fabled
beauty of Helen of Troy myths, or do they tell of real events? Historian
Michael Wood goes "In Search of the Trojan War" to find the answers.
- The Age of Heroes. In the late 19th century, Heinrich
Schliemann began the modern search for Troy with spectacular digs in
Turkey and Greece. Now, many archaeologists accuse him of fraudulence.
- The Legend Under Siege. Excavations by Schliemann, Wilhelm Dorpfeld, and Arthur Evans prompted each in turn to ask: Were these the
walls on which Helen stood and watched the heroes die?
- The Singer of Tales. When he retold stories around the Aegean,
Homer relied on an oral tradition that had passed them down for more
than ten generations. Wood retraces the battle as described by Homer.
- The Women of Troy. Helen of Troy is known as "the face that
launched a thousand ships." Was there really such a Greek queen, and was
she carried off by the Trojan prince, Paris?
- Empires of the Hittites. Finds in central Turkey have helped
us to reconstruct the diplomatic crisis that could have precipitated a
real-life Trojan War.
- The Fall of Troy. Was Troy actually destroyed by the Greeks?
Wood pieces together the archaeological, historical, and literary
evidence to uncover what really happened to Troy.
