The Department of Biology supports research in a wide range of subdisciplines and from the molecular/cellular through the organismal to the ecological/evolutionary levels. The Department provides extensive resources and facilities, including newly renovated and well equipped discipline-specific faculty research laboratories to support research. Additional equipment is accessible in many common use rooms. Many opportunities exist for both undergraduate or graduate students to work closely with an individual faculty member. Faculty and students present their research at regional, national, and international conferences, and publish in peer-reviewed publications.

Students at Villanova can become involved in research with faculty members through the following:

• Undergraduate directed research (independent study, often a prelude to senior thesis work).
• Undergraduate senior thesis (through Biology or through the Honors Program).
• Combined Bachelors-Masters degree program (with required thesis research).
• Master of Science in Biology (Masters degree with required thesis research).
• Graduate directed research (independent study, often a prelude to graduate thesis work).

Many students initially become involved in research at Villanova by working as hourly assistants in research laboratories.
