About the Chemistry and Biochemistry Department at Villanova
Chemistry and Biochemistry
are part of the
College of Liberal Arts and Sciences
at Villanova University. The Department occupies 35,000 square feet on the
2nd and 3rd floors of Mendel Hall and maintains suites of
instructional laboratories, each designed for a different subdiscipline of
chemistry with
modern instrumentation. We emphasize faculty-student interactions and
personalized instruction; typical class sizes are 20-25 for freshman
undergraduate majors courses, 10-15 for upper level undergraduate courses, and
10-15 for Masters courses.
The Department is comprised of
15 tenured/tenure-track faculty, 8 full-time
non-tenure track faculty, approximately 10
part-time instructors, and an 8 person service staff. Recent retirements in the
Department have led to the hiring of 11 junior faculty in the past
10 years. The University is committed to hiring vibrant faculty and supporting
their progress toward tenure. The Mendel Science Center (home to
Chemistry, Physics, Biology, Geography and the Environment, and Computer
Science) underwent a $36M renovation in Fall 1999 and contains state-of-the-art
research laboratories and modern, interactive teaching classrooms.
Teaching classrooms are equipped with multimedia projectors and the entire building (and campus) is
wireless. Other facilities in Mendel include two
chemical stockrooms, an NMR laboratory, a
SEM and TEM laboratory (Department of Biology), and a machine shop.
The Department offers
an
ACS accredited BS degree in Chemistry,
a
MS degree, and a
BS degree in Biochemistry. A
new
5-year BS/MS degree program was instituted in August of 2006. In addition to courses for Chemistry and Biochemistry
majors,
the Department offers service (core) courses in general, organic, biochemistry, and physical
chemistry to a large audience of majors in biology, nursing, and engineering,
along with pre-medical and arts students. Full-time Masters students (~25)
receive full tuition remission, a teaching assistantship stipend, and conduct
MS thesis research under a faculty advisor. Part-time Masters students
(>30) complete a coursework (non-thesis) MS degree.
Villanova is fortunate to
attract talented undergraduates students. The average SAT scores for the
2010 class of chemistry majors
was 1305. Recent students awards include a two-year EPA GRO Fellowship, a Fulbright Scholarship, and two Goldwater Scholarships. An average of
20 Chemistry and 25 Biochemistry
majors
graduate each year; approximately 10 students graduate with MS
degrees. Our MS graduates are very
successful in finding employment in the chemical or pharmaceutical industry, and
many have gone on to study for their doctorate degrees in Chemistry. In the
past five years, our graduates have enrolled in Ph.D. programs at U.C. Berkeley,
Princeton, Yale, and Wisconsin (among others).

Expectations and Available Resources
As a mid-sized liberal arts
University, Villanova provides a unique opportunity for chemists who wish both
to teach and to carry out research. We are interested in individuals who desire
to teach and conduct research with talented undergraduate and Masters students.
The exceptional applicant will demonstrate their ability to teach within their
discipline to undergraduate and
graduate students, special topics courses within their area of expertise, and
possibly contribute to the general (core) curriculum. Masters courses are
taught in the evenings to accommodate our part-time Masters students.
A new faculty member can
expect to teach 15 contact (not credit) hours per year. For example:
teaching a 3 credit lecture with a 1 hour (no credit) recitation counts as 4
contact hours and teaching a 3 hour, 1 credit lab counts as 3 contact
hours. New faculty are expected to establish a strong, externally funded
research program. They are provided with their own office, a personal
computer (laptop or desktop, PC or Mac), and laboratory space. Departmental instrumentation is used by all
faculty for both instruction and research;
a description of available resources
can be found on the Departmental website. New faculty members will be
provided with approximately $50,000 in startup funds (dependent upon research
needs) divided over two years. The Department provides extensive startup money
for commodity chemicals, glassware, and solvents. Salary and benefits are competitive
and 7.5% salary support will be provided for the first summer. Performance
is evaluated annually in the areas of teaching, research, and service as well as
during a comprehensive, pre-tenure 3rd year review. With appropriate
progress noted in the interim 3rd year
review, the College of Arts and Sciences provides a one-semester sabbatical leave for
pre-tenure
faculty members in their 4th year to encourage research advancement and
productivity in the tenure process. The tenure dossier is submitted
in November of the 6th year and a tenure decision is rendered by May. Faculty are eligible for subsequent
sabbaticals every 6 years following the 4th year sabbatical.
RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES:
The Department offers two mechanisms for participation in research by
the undergraduate major. Departmental fellowships for 9 weeks of summer research
(approximately 15-20 per summer) are funded by departmental, industrial and government sources.
Recipients of these fellowships carry out a research project under the direction
of a faculty member. Students are also encouraged to enroll in research
for academic credit during the school year.
