The student must have a bachelor’s degree in a science discipline or its
equivalent. This degree may be certified by the Committee of Professional
Training of the American Chemical Society, or be a bachelor’s degree in any
area, presenting acceptable credits for one year of study in both general
chemistry and organic chemistry, and one semester of study in analytical
chemistry and physical chemistry. Mathematics through integral calculus and
one year of physics is also expected. A second semester of both analytical
and physical chemistry is recommended, as well as study in inorganic and
biochemistry.
An undergraduate grade point average of 2.5 or greater on a 4-point
scale.
GRE General Test score
International students whose first language is not English must also
take the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) examination.
At its discretion, the chemistry department has the option to admit students
who do not meet the minimum criteria described above as non-matriculated
students. A non-matriculated student is allowed to take three graduate courses
in chemistry (for a total of nine credits). If the student has completed the
three courses with a quality grade point average of 3.0 or better, he may
petition the Graduate Committee in writing for matriculated status.
Some students would like to advance or refresh their knowledge in a specific
area of chemistry without pursuing a graduate degree. These students are allowed
to take one or two courses. If the student wishes to take additional courses, he
must apply in writing for matriculated status.
Those interested in simply advancing or refreshing their knowledge without
pursuing a graduate degree need to fill out only the first two pages of the
application and provide a transcript indicating an undergraduate or graduate
degree has been completed.
All applicants are required to submit to the:
Office of Graduate Studies:
The completed application and fees
Scores from their Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
Two official undergraduate transcripts
Department of
Chemistry:
Three letters of recommendation
