It is possible to obtain credit for industrial chemistry experience through
the internship program. Juniors and seniors with a GPA of 3.0 can apply for the
program through the internship office (610-519-4661). The internship can either
be part-time or full-time. International studies can also be achieved through
Villanova University or with one of many schools with whom we have special
arrangements (see page 10 of the University Catalog). Students need to apply in
their sophomore or junior year and have at least a GPA of 2.75. Students can
also go to summer school in a foreign country. Dr. Thomas Ricks is the director
of the program (610-519-6412).
Villanova University Chemistry Summer Research Program

In its recent history, the Chemistry Department has been able to support a
number of students with Summer Research Fellowships. Funding for the fellowships
comes from donations from local industries, and from faculty research grants. We
will continue this program in Summers as funds permit.
The Summer Research fellowship will provide a stipend of at least $2500 to
work for nine weeks doing research with a Villanova Chemistry faculty member.
Room and board will be included if desired. Details regarding housing will be
communicated when they become available.
If you are a Chemistry major in good standing, you should first decide on an
area of interest (Analytical Chemistry, Biochemistry, Inorganic Chemistry,
Organic Chemistry, or Physical Chemistry). Next, you should interview the
faculty in that area to find a research mentor. Next, you must complete the form
attached to this description. Your research mentor can help you with the
statement of proposed research. Submit the completed application to Nancy Proud
in the Chemistry Office by 4:30 PM on MARCH 31.
If you are a successful applicant, the Chemistry Department expects that you
will work full time (40 hours/week) for nine weeks in the research lab.
Normally, this time falls between the last weeks of May and the first weeks of
August, and is decided upon by mutual agreement between you and your research
mentor. You must submit a written report of your research activities to your
advisor upon conclusion of the research. You may not have outside employment or
enroll in summer classes during the research period. You will be expected to
give an oral poster presentation on your work at the Professional Development
Seminar sometime in Fall.
Again, the deadline for application is 4:30 p.m. on March 31.
Please do not procrastinate! Award announcements will be made by April 20.
