Office of Communications
 

 

The Office of Communications in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences exists to provide marketing, communications, public relations, event planning, publishing, and writing and editing support to the Office of the Dean and to the many departments and programs that compose the College.

Further, the Office of Communications in the College serves as a liaison between the College and other University offices, including the Office of Communication and Public Affairs, Office of University Admission, Office of Alumni Affairs, Office of University Development, Office of Student Life, Office of Enrollment Management, and the University’s other colleges, on issues related to communications and event planning.

Here is a summary of some of the services provided:
 

  • Marketing. Are you looking to enhance the quality of the promotional materials that you use to describe your program offerings? Then please consider contacting the Office of Communications. Through a collaborative process, we’ll work together to brainstorm and refine content, identify target audiences, and deliver your messages creatively and effectively through the use of many different media.

QUICK TIP: Start collecting materials that you like, that are visually appealing to you. Do you like one-page fact sheets or a tri-fold brochure? How about a pocket folder with step-down cards inside? This is a great way to begin the brainstorming process. Also, begin to think about how and when you'll use your materials. You want materials at hand that are appropriate for your event and audience.

  • Public Relations. Are you looking to increase exposure of your program and/or sponsored events? Let’s collaborate to build an appropriate public relations strategy to fulfill your needs and exceed your goals.

QUICK TIP: Be sure to post your event announcement on your department's home page, the College's home page, and the University's home page. QUICK TIP: Consider targeted invitations. Should you invite colleagues and students from other colleges and universities in the area to your event in addition to our own faculty, students, and staff?

QUICK TIP: Looking for media coverage for a particular event or project? Contact the College's Office of Communications for assistance in contacting the press. The College's office will work directly with the University's Office of Communications and Public Affairs to contact the media.

  • Communications. What you say is as important as how you say it. Contact the Office of Communications in the College for help on creating messages and delivering them.
     
  • Visual Identity. Looking to apply the University’s visual identity standards, such as the approved University logos, colors, and fonts, but a bit confused on how to do it? Let the Office of Communications in the College help guide you through the process.

QUICK TIP: Read through the University's style manual. Here, many of your questions will be answered.

QUICK TIP: Be sure to use the correct logo of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences on all of your printed pieces. That way, your audience will know that your department or program is part of the College.

  • Event Planning. Struggling with attendance at your events? Looking to broaden your outreach efforts? Let the Office of Communications in the College assist you throughout all phases of planning your event, from securing the most appropriate location to filling those empty auditorium chairs.

  • Print Publishing. Maybe it’s time to create a new brochure, or maybe you need to design a flyer or poster to advertise an upcoming seminar or lecture series. Stop struggling with Microsoft Publisher and contact the Office of Communications for help.

QUICK TIP: Utilize the University's Graphic Services Department. Graphic Services is more than a "print shop." The department offers a wide range of design services as well as printing services.

  • Web Publishing. The Web is more than a place to post your department’s brochure as a PDF. Its dynamic capabilities can help you showcase your program in innovative ways. Let the Office of College Communications help demystify the process of creating and gathering Web content.
     
  • Writing and Editing. Sometimes all you need is a second pair of eyes to help you refine your print or Web content. Consider contacting the Office of Communications in the College for assistance.
