Certificate in Professional Development

The Certificate in Professional Development is designed for First-Year students in the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences as an opportunity to explore the value of a liberal arts & sciences education as a foundation for a life of meaningful work. Our faculty know that a major in the liberal arts & sciences will provide students with needed writing, communication, analytical, and critical thinking skills to be successful in any profession, but students need specific, concrete examples. Faculty teaching in the program and alumni participating will articulate how a liberal arts and sciences education has shaped them as successful professionals.

Goals include:
  • Defining life as a journey in which the process of self-discovery and learning is inter-related and lifelong;
  • Enabling students to ask meaningful questions about life;
  • Establishing a relationship between self-perception and thinking;
  • Beginning a process that allows students to see multiple possibilities for themselves and to accept those possibilities for others;
  • Understanding the transferable skills and competencies needed for success in the twenty-first century workforce; and
  • Providing models (faculty and alumni) who can articulate the role of the liberal arts and sciences in their personal and professional success.
To complete the Certificate in Professional Development, students will do the following:
  • Meet with the faculty advisor in two forums, exploring
    • The value of a liberal arts and sciences education
    • Personal development and the life of the mind.
  • Complete writing assignments, including an interview assignment.
  • Meet with alumni in a small group meeting in spring 2008 and attend an alumni panel and keynote address in fall 2008. Reflection paper/blog will be required as a response to these events.
