Tenure-Track Searches
A prolegomena:
Like many universities across the country (and, likely, across the world), our
Department has just learned that we have the authorization to hire two
replacement tenure-track positions for a start date of Fall, 2010.
Obviously, this news came later than would have been ideal, but (lacking control
over vast global-economic realities) we are moving forward with all due speed to
fill our positions with the best possible persons!
We are planning to use the National Communication Association conference in
Chicago as a way to do some initial pre-screening; those candidates not
attending the conference should indicate this in their letters of application;
candidates selected for pre-interviews but not attending NCA will be interviewed
by phone, as our search committees determine the best possible candidates to
bring onto campus for final interviews.
Basic description of both positions:
Villanova University, Department of Communication is hiring two tenure-track
Assistant Professors starting Fall 2010. We seek candidates who can teach
undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of expertise, as well as other
required and elective courses across the Communication curriculum. Candidates
must have: Ph.D. (completed by August, 2010), an active research program, and
collegiate teaching experience.
Position 1: Assistant Professor, Journalism/Media Studies. In addition to
research and teaching interests in Journalism/Media Studies, the ideal candidate
will have background and interest in new media, and will have research and
teaching interests that demonstrate the potential of journalism and media
studies to address issues of social conflict and/or social justice. Journalistic
experience preferred, but not required.
Position 2: Assistant Professor, Rhetoric. The ideal candidate will have
research and teaching interests that demonstrate rhetoric’s potential to address
issues of social conflict and/or social justice.
NEW: INSTRUCTIONS FOR
APPLYING: Except for official undergraduate and graduate transcripts,
which must be mailed, applicants must apply online at
https://jobs.villanova.edu,
and provide a cover letter (indicating NCA availability), c.v., evidence of
excellence in teaching, writing sample, and three letters of recommendation.
Transcripts should be mailed directly to Search committee chair, Position Name,
Department of Communication, Villanova University, 800 Lancaster Avenue,
Villanova, PA 19085-1699.
Review of applications begins immediately and will continue until the position
is filled. Because of the tight turnaround with NCA, candidates attending the
conference should email cover letter and c.v. as soon as possible to
loretta.chiaverini@villanova.edu
(with the rest of the application to follow as per the above instructions), so
that they can be considered for pre-interviews during the conference.

Additional Information About the Communication Dept:
We're a medium sized department (currently 22 full-time faculty), housed within
a College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. Our department is unique, in that we cover
all areas of the field (with 8 undergraduate specializations), integrate theory
and practice throughout the curriculum, and teach undergraduate and graduate
courses in both qualitative and quantitative research methods. We are the
largest major in the College (and in the University) at the undergraduate level,
and have a rapidly growing, but high quality M.A. program. How strong is the
program? All students who have applied to Ph.D. programs have been accepted with
funding. We also have resources to support grant applications for projects
enhancing faculty members' research and teaching interests.
Those are just the basic facts, though. We're a dynamic, diverse, committed
faculty, with a good mix of senior and junior faculty--largely because we have
hired 10 times (tenure-track) within the last 12 years. We're a department that
values strong programs of research, strong teaching, and collegiality. Our ideal
is the teacher-scholar, which means that you will not get tenure & promotion
based solely on teaching; regular scholarly publication is necessary in order to
receive a positive review. As you can see from our faculty descriptions, we're
filled with faculty who fit that profile, and who are committed to collegiality,
the life of the mind, and the importance of what we study. We also pride
ourselves on our commitment to issues of social justice, in line with the
University's mission, and to the diversity of our student and faculty body.
We've got other advantages, too, though too many to list. A brief taste: a 3/2
teaching load, a junior sabbatical (4th year), a university summer grant
program, graduate students, and an internal grant program, run through our
graduate program. Plus, the scholars who fill the Rhetoric position will be
eligible for teaching in our Department’s Summer in Greece study abroad program
(see the link under “undergraduate programs” on this website).
In other words, there is a good deal to be excited about with Communication @
Villanova. We invite your application, and look forward to meeting you at NCA!
