Since 2004, Villanova’s Communication Department has offered its students the
opportunity to take part in an absolutely unforgettable program: our Vatican
Internships. This program, which has expanded to now include two different
Vatican offices and Catholic News Service, provides students with the
opportunity to combine international study with an invaluable (and truly unique)
internship experience. Not only do our interns get exclusive looks inside the
Vatican, but they live, study, and work in the heart of Rome!
THE INTERNSHIPS:
Students interested in Media Production intern at the
Vatican's Internet Office. This internship focuses on the creation of
multimedia content for the Vatican's main website, as well as affiliated sites.
Although the projects worked on are always changing, right now our intern in
this office is working on our
Virtual Reality project allowing
people across the world to access the beauty of the Basilicas and the Vatican
Museum as never before.
Students interested in Public Relations intern at the
Pontifical Council for Social Communications. This internship involves
work as a media relations officer for the Vatican. This internship also allows
students to work on the Pope's annual World Communication Day Message, as well
as the public relations surrounding the Vatican's celebrations of Christmas and
Easter.
Students interested in Journalism intern at the Rome bureau of
Catholic News Service. This internship allows students the
opportunity to cover the events and news of the Church for an international
English language news service. Students leave this internship with not only real
news experience, but also a set of publications under their byline.
THE VATICAN EXPERIENCE:
The Vatican Experience blends work at an internship site with intensive
private Italian tutoring and additional coursework (currently arranged
through a partnership with St. Mary's College, and its Rome program). Both the
tutoring and internship work occur in the morning, leaving the afternoons free
to complete the two additional courses selected from the St. Mary's offerings.
Students are housed through the St. Mary's program, which means they
reside in a four-star hotel in the center of Rome, with all meals provided.
The hotel is very close to such famous Roman sites as Campo di Fiori, Piazza
Navona, and the Pantheon--meanwhile, classrooms and the internship sites are an
easy walk away.
Travel within Italy is also a part of the experience, as arranged through the
St. Mary's program--though students typically also travel on their own, as with
any international program.
Finally, thanks to a generous gift from the Waterhouse Family, the cost of
the round trip ticket to Italy is covered for students selected to take part
in the Vatican Internship program.
