The Communication Department at Villanova has recently adopted a top-notch
undergraduate major curriculum, applying to the class of 2009 and beyond. If you
are a member of the classes of 2008, you will still benefit from the new courses
offered in conjunction with this curriculum--but watch for notes that affect you
specifically. Please look through the news listed here, or choose one of the
links to the left of this page.

Handbook
First, for those of you who are current Freshmen or Sophomores, please check out our
advice for those who are thinking about COM as a major!
You can find the advice page here.
If you're in your first year or two here at VU, you should be focusing on your intro-level courses
(1000 and 1100 are required to declare the major, plus 1200 is required. 1300 is recommended as your
fine arts requirement), or, if you've finished those, your 2000-level theory courses, since you need to
take 2. Current Juniors might also think about taking the required Advanced research course (4001 OR 4002),
if you've already taken COM 1200.
If you're a Senior, then be sure to check out the topics for our Senior Project sections,
so you can match your interests with the right section of this course. Download the
The Fall 2008 electives guide as a .PDF file.
Faculty
In the Fall, we will be joined by a new full-time faculty member in the Department, Dr. Jie (Jennifer) Xu.
Dr. Xu will be joining us from the University of Alabama, where she did her doctoral work in
Mass Communication. She specializes in the evaluation of public communication campaigns—and, in the
future, will be offering courses that focus on how to take an advertising, public relations, or health
campaign & systematically evaluate its effectiveness (so add that to your portfolio and resume!).
Dr. Xu will be teaching 2 courses in the Fall—one section of
COM 2300 - Theories of Mass Communication
,
and one section of
COM 4002 - Quantitative Research in COM
.
She’s new to the university, so if you see “Staff” listed for those courses, don’t be
alarmed—your instructor will be Dr. Xu!
