Applicants should have at least a 3.0 GPA, and an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. Applicants only need to complete the application and provide official undergraduate and graduate transcripts.

All applicants are required to submit to the:

 Office of Graduate Studies
  • The completed application and fees
  • Scores from their GRE or MAT
  • Two official undergraduate transcripts (Certificate Students: 2 Math/2 English prerequisite courses are required
  • Work experience and goals form
  • Three letters of recommendation
 Department of Education
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A brief 250-word statement about their fields of interest, pertinent experience, prior research and objectives in seeking the master's degree
  • Any additional information they would like to convey

Additional Requirements

Master of Arts in Education

  • Of the required 18 undergraduate credits, 6 of those credits may be in student teaching (Student teaching or teaching experience is desireable).
  • One of the following:
    • Evidence of a currently valid teaching certificate
    • Scores on the GRE test
    • Score on either the Professional Knowledge test or the Principles of Learning and Teaching Test of the National Teacher Examination (NTE).

    *Exceptional cases are considered on an individual basis.

Master of Arts in Education plus Teacher Certification

  • Baccalaureate degree should be in a teaching areateaching area* (English, Foreign Language, Mathematics, etc.)*  (See additional courses that may be needed).
  • Passed the Praxis Series Praxis I: Academic Skills Assessment examination. Scores should be submitted by Educational Testing Services (ETS) to the Department of Education and Human Services at Villanova University. **  (See testing requirements for more information).

*Additional Courses in the teaching area may be required prior to the start of the program based upon a transcript evaluation. Please refer to the Subject Area Course Requirements section to evaluate subject area requirements for certification.

** Students are also encouraged to take the Praxis II: Content Knowledge Assessment in their subject area. This will provide further proof of subject area competency. Also, as a required portion of the program curriculum, it would benefit the student to take it before entry into the program. Applicants should also review the General Admission Procedures for Graduate Studies. Return the completed application form and transcripts of ALL undergraduate and graduate work to the Office of Graduate Studies. Letters of recommendation should be sent to the Department of Education and Human Services.

Application materials must be received by March 1 for consideration to receive an assistantship or scholarship.

Complete Application

In order to insure a timely review, a complete application must be submitted. A complete application includes:

  1. Application for admission online or paper applicationPDF icon
  2. Program specific application requirements must be completed as defined by each graduate program.
  3. Non-refundable application fee of $50.* (payable to Villanova University)
  4. Official transcripts (two copies) of all previous college work (both undergraduate and graduate) sent directly to the Graduate Studies Office, by the Registrar of the Colleges or Universities involved.
  5. Letters of recommendation (3) forwarded directly to the Director of the program to which you are applying.
  6. GRE scores
  7. TOEFL scores for international students
  8. Financial Certification for international students needing an F1 Visa.

*fee waived for students with a Villanova degree
