Elementary Education

In partnership with Rosemont College, an adjoining Catholic Liberal Arts college, Villanova offers a teacher preparation program in Elementary Education. Students choose a Villanova major other than Education and use their electives to take education courses at Rosemont College toward their state certification. Students who receive their certification are eligible to teach in Pennsylvania’s public schools and may apply to teach in other states more readily through an interstate agreement.

Program Information

Students interested in pursuing a professional teaching career in Elementary Education following graduation should contact the program coordinator as freshmen to review the requirements in order to register for the required courses.  Teaching candidates may apply to join the Rosemont Teacher Preparation Program as sophomores after having taken 47 or 48 credits and earned a minimal 2.8 GPA.  Requirements for state certification include a minimal 3.0 GPA, a Bachelor's degree in approved majors, six credits each of English and Mathematics, field experiences including a full semester of student teaching in area elementary schools and satisfactory performance and test evaluations.  Other qualifications include a good moral character and health and legal clearances.

Villanova provides shuttle bus transportation to the Rosemont College campus. For more information, please see the “Elementary Education Handbook” on this website.
