Subject: 11/13: Villanovans in DC program
Hello again!
I just wanted to make you aware of another career exploration opportunity
for your students through Career Services. On November 13th, Career Services
will be traveling to Washington, DC for the day! During our time in
Washington, students will have the opportunity to tour the Capitol, and get
advice from experts in areas including Capitol Hill, lobbying, and
non-profits. Our visit will end with an opportunity to meet and network with
Villanova University alumni who live and work in DC.
STUDENTS MUST PRE REGISTER to attend this event and space is limited! Please
pass this information along and encourage your students to register sooner
rather than later at:
http://www.villanova.edu/vpaa/careers/events/registration_washington.htm.
There will be a separate registration page for DC area alum who are
interested in attending the Networking portion of the program. If you have
any connections to alum in the DC area, please let me know and I will pass
along the link to you as soon as it is up and running.
In the meantime, please let me know if you have any additional questions!
Thank you again!
Jenn

Notes about registration
From: Evan Radcliffe Sent:
Wednesday, October 21, 2009 Subject: Notes on courses and registration
English majors--
As the time to register
approaches, I wanted to let you know about some things and remind you of others.
1) You can find the descriptions for English courses here:
http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/assets/documents/english/current_courses.pdf.
On the first page is also a listing of which courses fill which English area
requirements. That listing also appears on our Current Courses webpage:
http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/english/courses/. On that webpage, you can
also see a chart of courses in relation to diversity requirements and
concentrations such as Irish Studies and Gender & Women’s Studies. The chart
also includes links to individual course descriptions.
Many course descriptions are also already accessible via the Syllabus Available
link in the Master Schedule on Novasis. You can simply click on that link.
2) Be aware that you are supposed to take English 2250, Ways of Reading, before
your senior year: it is the course that fulfills the college's Junior Research
Requirement.
3) English 2101, The British Literary Tradition I, is not a required course for
English majors, but we recommend that you take it, and take it early, since it
will introduce you to writers, texts, and issues that are crucial to most
subsequent courses.
4) As you may know, we have put together “A Guide to Advising for English
Majors,” which you can read here:
http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/english/advisors/guide.htm. It includes a
wealth of information.
5) Finally, I hope you’ve checked in with your advisor or have set up an
appointment. If you haven’t, you run the risk of missing your registration time
because you don’t have your PIN (normally we don’t give out PIN numbers to
students who haven’t talked to an advisor) or of ending up with courses that
aren’t the right ones for you.
Your advisor can best help you if you have prepared ahead of time. Before you
see your advisor, remind yourself about your requirements, review the
requirements you have already taken care of, and think about what courses you
want to take next semester; you’re the one who finally is responsible for
choosing the right courses for you. (English requirements are described on this
page:
http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/english/undergrad/major/. You can also find
a course planning chart here:
http://www.villanova.edu/artsci/english/undergrad/major/chart.htm.) And
since you probably have the choice of taking some electives, think about things
like what excites you and what you wish you knew more about. Don’t be afraid to
explore.

Student Advisory Committee meeting

Dear English Major,
I would like to invite you to join the English department’s Student Advisory
Committee. Students on the committee serve as consultants for the English
department (for example, offering ideas on improving the major) and as advisors
for younger majors and prospective majors.

welcome your contribution to it. Our first meeting this year will be on Friday,
September 11, at 12:30 in the English department conference room (SAC 4th floor).
Refreshments will be served!

Grad school information session
From: Cristina Maria
Cervone Sent: Monday, October 20, 2008 Subject: Grad school information session
Dear English majors,
Have you thought about applying to graduate school?
If you are curious about graduate programs in literature, mark your calendar for
next week’s informational session. Whether your application is a month or three
years away, this session will address many questions you may have. Majors at any
stage are welcome—the sooner you begin to plan, the better you will be able to
focus your efforts for a strong application.
This session will include advice on such topics as:
• Is grad school right for you? • What kinds of careers do M.A. and Ph.D. programs prepare you for? • What financial, personal, and professional considerations should you take into
account when applying? • How much do you need to know in advance about what you want to study? • How will you decide where to apply? What sorts of information should you be
seeking about programs you’re interested in? • What materials will you need for your applications? For juniors, in
particular: what steps can you take now to ensure that you’ll be best prepared
when it’s time to apply?
When? Friday, October 31 (spooky!), at 12:30 (sandwiches will be served)
Where? SAC 410 RSVP: I’ll need a (rough) headcount for the refreshments, so please e-mail me at cristina.cervone@villanova.edu by noon on Friday, Oct. 24 (this Friday) if you
think you’re likely to attend. Encourage your friends to come!
