Frederick Douglass series
The English Department’s mission is based on the belief that skillful,
self-conscious reading, writing, and thinking form the foundation for a
well-examined life well-lived. We seek to develop rigorous yet creative forms of
analysis and expression that help us comprehend our own and others’ cultures and
values. As teachers, students, and scholars, we aspire to create a community
that celebrates imaginative approaches to living and explores language’s and
literature’s potential to order and transform the world.
To this end, we offer both a major and
minor in English, in addition to providing relevant
course offerings to several related minors and
concentrations.
“I learned skills that are practical in any career. One
example: because I had learned to organize my ideas for a paper, I could
formulate my thoughts for job interviews, and then later on make my points with
clarity in my job. Any job requires you to have particular skills, but being an
English major teaches you basic skills you need as a foundation for anything.”
- Susan Berrettini
“I received the best possible education at Villanova with the English major. The
quality of my writing and of my critical thinking has greatly improved over the
last four years.”
