| Guidelines for Writing Intensive Courses in the Major |
- At least 20 pages of assigned writing, a portion of which should be
polished prose reflecting disciplinary conventions.
- Much or the writing for the course should be the result of a revision
process involving discussion and ungraded evaluation of student texts. The
ideal process would give students experience with the give and take that
characterizes most professional writing in the discipline.
- A significant portion of class time should be devoted to an examination
of characteristic disciplinary prose: close reading of journal articles and
comparative study of popular and professional presentations of current
controversies in the discipline.
- Students should be given opportunities to practice writing for both
professional and nonprofessional audiences as an expert in the discipline.
