Solving environmental problems is inherently interdisciplinary, and requires a firm background in environmental science as well as in environmental policy/management and environmental ethics and social science. The Environmental Studies Concentration at Villanova promotes an interdisciplinary approach to environmental issues through both coursework and independent study/internship experience.

For example, coursework in environmental science provides the technical background necessary for understanding the ecological, chemical, and human and environmental health aspects of the environment. Environmental engineering leads to an understanding of ecosystem services and the parameters important in sustainable development.

Coursework in environmental policy and management provides the tools for environmental law and policy formulation and implementation. Courses in the humanities, including philosophy, sociology, and history, underscore the ethical and societal aspects of environmental issues.

Students interested in a more extensive curriculum and degree options in the environmental field should consider the new B.A. in Environmental Studies or B.S. in Environmental Science. Contact the Department of Geography and the Environment for more information.
