One element of the concentration is the completion of at least 100 hours of community service. These 100 hours must be completed at a site approved by the Coordinator of Service of the Ethics Program.
Required service may be done at the same site or at several service experiences.

Normally, the service requirement is completed during the academic year. However, service can be done over the break, in the summer, or overseas. There are many alternatives to satisfying the service requirement. The Service Coordinator is the final arbiter of whether or not a site or option is acceptable.

A site is approved based on the following two criteria, which are listed in order of importance:

  • Service with and for an underserved population or endangered ecosystem, e.g. Hospice Care, Care of Homeless Communities, Habitat for Humanity, Education, Literacy Tutoring, ecological/environmental advocacy, political advocacy, etc.
  • The service is connected to the academic track that a student has chosen to pursue.
