One of the reasons that I decided to attend Villanova was the offering of a Japanese Minor for all students. While I learned the basics of the language in high school, I had a desire to be exposed to more authentic and functional Japanese language and cultural teachings. The Japanese Studies Program at Villanova provides students with opportunities to practice their Japanese with native speaking foreign exchange students through weekly conversation sessions.

The decision to study abroad in Japan for a year was probably one of the best
decisions I have ever made. I was a bit nervous when I first committed to a
whole year abroad; I knew that I would miss my family and friends and that there
would be difficulties living alone in a foreign country. Yet I knew that I would
never have this opportunity again, and so off I went.

Four years ago, when I was entering Villanova University as a freshman, I was
presented with a choice. As small as it seemed at the time, it was one of the
most important choices I would make, affecting the next several years of my
life. That choice: what course would I take to fulfill my foreign language
requirement? Feeling a little adventurous, I enrolled in “Introduction to
Japanese.”

We have all heard the expression, "an education for life." Well, this expression
holds significant meaning for me. Between the years 1990 and 1992, I studied
Japanese culture and language under Villanova University’s Japanese Studies
program. Starting with Japanese history and cultural, I further studied the
language courses. These courses prepared me with international communication
skills that would enhance my career for many years to follow.
