Applicants should have at least 18 undergraduate credits in history and have at least a 3.0 GPA, or an undergraduate degree from an accredited institution. Occasionally, we accept applicants who majored in related fields, such as literature, philosophy or political science. For those applying to the Post-M.A. Certificate Program, applicants only need to complete the application and provide official undergraduate and graduate transcripts. No letters of recommendation or GRE scores are required.

All applicants are required to submit to the:
 Office of Graduate Studies:
  • The completed application and fees
  • Scores from their Graduate Record Examination (GRE)
  • Two official undergraduate transcripts
 Department of History:
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • A brief 250-word statement about their fields of interest in history, pertinent experience, prior research and objectives in seeking the Master's Degree
  • Any additional information they would like to convey
  • A writing sample for applicants interested in assistantships or scholarships, all of which are awarded once a year [March 1 deadline]

Application materials must be received by March 1 for consideration to receive an assistantship or scholarship.

Complete Application

In order to insure a timely review, a complete application must be submitted. A complete application includes:

  1. Application for admission online or paper applicationPDF icon
  2. Program specific application requirements must be completed as defined by each graduate program.
  3. Non-refundable application fee of $50.* (payable to Villanova University)
  4. Official transcripts (two copies) of all previous college work (both undergraduate and graduate) sent directly to the Graduate Studies Office, by the Registrar of the Colleges or Universities involved.
  5. Letters of recommendation (3) forwarded directly to the Director of the program to which you are applying.
  6. GRE scores
  7. TOEFL scores for international students
  8. Financial Certification for international students needing an F1 Visa.

*fee waived for students with a Villanova degree
