Humanities Major, Communication Minor
Blue Bell, PA

I transferred to the Humanities major in the fall of my senior year. I thought I wanted to major in Communication but by the time I got to the end of the major’s requirements, I realized that I really needed to improve my reading, writing, and critical thinking skills before I graduated. The dean of the Liberal Arts College talked to me about the Humanities major, and that was the icing on the cake that persuaded me to switch.  read more...

Humanities Major
West Caldwell, NJ

I was drawn to the Humanities major for a myriad of reasons. I can truly see that all of them have the same center & circumference in a desire to read, study, & discuss (in round table discussions usually) great books in history, as well be introduced to them by an absolutely outstanding group of professors. Initially undeclared, I can say for sure that the seeds were planted to pursue this major in my very first semester here at Villanova when I took the Core Humanities Seminar, which all freshman are required to take.  read more...

Humanities Major, Chinese Minor
Annapolis, Maryland

I will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps in May 2007. Like many incoming freshmen, I came to Villanova with an open mind eager to seize the academic opportunities unavailable in high school. When I entered the University as an undeclared arts major, I recognized the problem with the typical arts major curriculum: Students are offered a mind boggling array of electives but feel constrained by University and major requirements in making course choices. All this leads to confusion as the typical academic curriculum tends to emphasize training in narrow disciplines without a cohesive and meaningful theme or “end” to which our studies are driven.  read more...

Double major: Humanities and History
Wilmington, DE

I declared my Humanities major late in my collegiate career. By the fall of my senior year, I had already completed another arts degree. In pursuing my first arts degree, I had taken two Humanities courses. I enjoyed these courses so much that I decided to take on another major, the Humanities major. For the first time, I felt my opinion mattered to my professors. This sense of connection extended to other students as well. I found myself continuing class discussions long after the class had ended. read more...

Humanities & Classics Double Major; Philosophy Minor
Las Vegas, NV

I actually stumbled into Humanities; my original intent was to major in Political Science and Economics. My Core professor introduced me to Humanities and suggested that I take a class to see what it was all about – I could at least fulfill an upper level requirement. So I took two classes that caught my eye for obvious reasons: “the Goods & the Good Life” (economics) and “Politics & Human Nature” (political science). read more...

Humanities Major, Business Minor
Santiago, Dominican Republic

I am glad to say that I will be graduating on May 2007 with a Humanities degree. It has helped put life in perspective and helped me understand better what is expected of me throughout my adult life. While not exactly “useful” like a degree in Accounting or Applied Chemistry, I am more interested in even such topics because they are part of the Human experience. When I first arrived at Villanova I did not have a particular career in mind, and could not decide between all the programs that I liked. After some deliberation, I decided that the Humanities Department seemed to encompass everything I liked about learning, and set me up for any career that I might decide upon. read more...
