Students who choose to major in Humanities can look forward to discovering a sense of community and friendship in the classroom that is often difficult to find in a large university. Because of the coordinated nature of the program, students will be in many of the same classes with each other; the series of team-taught seminars will also allow the students to get to know their professors and their classmates as well. Through such mutual interaction over the course of several semesters, students form a bond that allows the inquiry begun in the classroom to carry over into more informal settings.

Some Final Thoughts

Students should take their future very seriously. But, doing that means thinking broadly about the meaning and purpose of education. Thinking of your education only in terms of what it does for your career fails to take the future sufficiently seriously because it prepares you for life in a narrow way. For this reason, it becomes useless if the goals you have at a pretty young age don't pan out. In the Humanities Department, we want you to think of your life in terms of your vocation. Vocation is a much more comprehensive approach: what sort of a person do I have to be to be able to live out whatever it is that might be given to me to live out, with integrity.
