Letter from the Dean

Dear Colleagues:

Another summer has flown by far too quickly in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Soon we will be welcoming our new students and welcoming back our returning students to campus. The fall 2005 semester will begin on Wednesday, August 24.

During the summer months, subcommittees of the Colleges’ Strategic Planning Committee (SPC) have been meeting regularly and working diligently on various important tasks, including the development and execution of the College’s Academic Strategic Plan. I’d like to thank the members of these subcommittees for all of their efforts to advance the mission of the College.

Finally, as you may know, I have been granted a sabbatical in the fall semester. Dr. Catherine Hill, associate dean of the College, will serve as acting dean in my absence. Dr. Hill, along with Associate Dean Bob DeVos, Assistant Dean Mario D’Ignazio, and our new Associate Dean for the Sciences Kel Wieder will be at your service. If anything comes up in my absence that needs the Dean’s Office’s attention, please do not hesitate to contact Dr. Hill.

With best wishes,

Kail C. Ellis, O.S.A., Ph.D.
Dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences

Faculty Research in the News

Patrick Markey, Ph.D., an assistant professor of psychology, and his wife Charlotte Markey, Ph.D., an assistant professor at Rutgers University-Camden, have been studying what couples believe is attractive and desirable in the female form. IT Corner

Departmental Laptop Loaners

Starting this Fall semester a number of "loaner" laptops will be available to each department for faculty to check-out on an as-needed basis. More information to follow in the next E-newsletter.

Research Data Storage

The College recently added 1 TB (1,000 Gigabytes) to our SAN (Storage Area Network) Server, devoted entirely to storing research-related data. The advantages of this system are the ability to access the data from multiple computers, the redundancy of the server hard drives (RAID 5 array and backup to tape) and security permissions. Faculty may learn more and request space by visiting this webpage: http://www.artsci.villanova.edu/admin/research_data.html.

Summer Lab Upgrades

A significant number of labs & research labs were upgraded with newer computers and/or monitors this summer throughout Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, English (Falvey E-media) Mathematics (MRLC), Physics, Psychology & The Writing Center.
