Organization of Human Services Finishes Another Year With Second Mile Friends

Article and photo submitted by Joan Capolupo. The Organization of Human Services (OHS) provides the opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in the many areas of the human service field to students in Human Services, Psychology, Sociology, and related majors. An important aspect of the organization is the chance to become involved with the community outside of Villanova.

OHS hosts the Second Mile Friend Program one Sunday a month, during which at-risk elementary youth come to the Villanova campus for several hours of activities with their “college friends.” In September, the “friends” make goals for the elementary students that they work toward throughout the year. Each month when they arrive, they engage in themed activities, which are hosted by different organizations, teams, and clubs on campus. Some of these themes include “Science Day,” “Multicultural Day,” and “Helping Hands Day.” The youth look forward to coming back to the Villanova campus each month and seeing the familiar faces of their “college friends.”

At the end of each academic year, OHS and other Villanova members hold an Awards Picnic for our Second Mile Friends. It is a way to acknowledge and celebrate the progress the children have made since September. The “young friends” also receive gifts at the picnic. This year, they received bags filled with many Villanova goodies donated by campus organizations. The Second Mile program is a rewarding experience for both the Villanova students and community as well as a great opportunity for the youth to gain a mentor and friend they look forward to seeing every month.

OHS Forms New Partnership With Paul Robeson High School for Human Services in Philadelphia

Article and photo submitted by Joan Capolupo. The Organization of Human Services (OHS) continues to grow and expand both on campus and in the surrounding community. During the 2008-2009 school year, the members of OHS launched a new partnership with the Paul Robeson High School for Human Services in Philadelphia. The High School for Human Services offers a high school education to students who apply and have indicated an interest in a career in the human services field.

An essential part of any high school is a library, but the Paul Robeson High School has only an empty room designated for one. Hence, the first initiative for OHS with the High School for Human Services was holding a book drive at Villanova University to collect any unused books from students, professors, and staff members. The turnout was astounding, and OHS was able to collect over 15 boxes of books to donate to the new library/ computer lounge room at the high school. The Principal and the students were overwhelmed when three cars pulled up filled with the books.

OHS will continue its partnership with the Paul Robeson High School for Human Services in future years. Goals will include bringing students from Paul Robeson to the Villanova campus for tours and to shadow students in the Human Services program, as well as coordinating a mentoring program with the high school where Villanova students could visit once each month. Beginning this new partnership with the High School for Human Services in Philadelphia has been a rewarding experience allowing Villanova to provide mentorship for high school students with career goals similar to those in our own Human Services program.
