  • one course in the Arts (art history and literature);
  • one course in the Humanities (Religion, Ethics, and Philosophy);
  • and one in History and the Social Sciences.

The three required core courses are interdisciplinary core seminars specifically designed for the Liberal Studies program. Each course deals with a specific interdisciplinary area of the liberal arts. To insure that the student will achieve a certain breadth of education, the student shall select the regular departmental courses from a minimum of three departmental areas. All courses, including the final essay requirement, will be selected by the student in consultation with his/her academic advisor. It is expected in completing the Liberal Studies program's requirements that the student will select courses which will form an integrated course of studies. There will be a comprehensive examination taken after the student's ninth course.

Six Disciplinary Courses
After taking the required core courses in the three areas, the student is free to choose eighteen credits (six three-credit courses, or groups of three one-credit courses) from the regular graduate course offerings of almost 20 departments in the humanities and social sciences at Villanova. There are almost 200 courses to choose from. Or the student may continue to take as many core courses as he or she chooses. Almost all courses are offered in the late afternoon and evening and are offered year round.

Completing the Program

The LST student completes the program with a directed readings course of the student's own design, an experience enabling the student to integrate his or her program and to cap it with a culminating essay or project.

Independent Study
A student may also propose to do an independent study on a topic that is not offered in Villanova's graduate course offerings. There is also precedent for LST students to combine the Directed Readings course with an Independent Study to carry out a more ambitious culminating essay or project. The Independent Study replaces one of the six disciplinary courses.

After his or her ninth course, the student takes a custom tailored comprehensive examination. It may be taken orally or in writing. No two students make the same selections. You decide what courses and culminating project are best for your education.
