The following is a list of frequently asked questions and responses, relating to MLRC policy and operation. These questions were contributed by the MLRC staff of tutors in an effort to enlighten the Villanova student-body regarding the day-to-day function of the MLRC. If you have a question or concern which is not presented below, please
email your question to us. You should get a response by the next school day.
How much does it cost to
use the MLRC?
Absolutely nothing. All of our services are free to all
Villanova students.
What courses can I get
help with at the MLRC?
The MLRC provides tutoring for most of the 1000 and 2000
level math courses offered by Villanova. The only 1000 and 2000 level courses
that we do not provide tutoring for are Math 1210, 1220, 2310 and 2600. Refer
to the Courses
sections for detailed information on courses for which we provide tutoring
services.
If I am not taking a
course for which the MLRC provides tutoring, can I still use the MRLC?
Yes. The MLRC tutoring lab is still available for your use,
when working on assignments and to meet in groups. You can also use the MLRC
computer lab to use mathematical software such as Maple, Minitab, SAS, Excel,
etc. If you are taking a math or statistics course offered by another
department, we will do our best to help you - just ask. Finally, you may also
luck out and get help with an advanced level course (such as Advanced Calculus
or Modern Algebra) if one of our tutors is familiar with that subject.
Will the tutor help me
for as long as I need help?
Yes and no. The MLRC tutors will usually help you for 5-10
minutes and then move on to help someone else. They will return to you over and
over, however, for as long as you need help. If you prefer to have an
uninterupted tutoring session then you can sign up for a 20-minute private
tutoring appointment. See below for more details.
Do I need to make an
appointment?
No. It is not necessary to make an appointment to use the MLRC services. Most of our business is done on a walk-in basis. Come on in and
begin to look over your assignments and a tutor will be around to help you.
Can I make an
appointment if I want to?
Yes. Although it is not required, you may make an appointment
for a private tutoring session for the Monday - Thursday afternoon time slots
(fall and spring semesters only). The appointments are for 20 minutes at one
time and you may sign up for 1 appointment in a day and 2 in a week. All you
have to do is visit the MLRC (or call 519-MLRC) during our hours of operation
and ask the center monitor if you can sign up.
Do you have a solutions
manuals to my math text book, that I could use.
The MLRC has some solutions manuals, but they are only for
use by MLRC employees. These manuals are never loaned out to students.
Do I need to bring
anything with me when I come for help?
You should always bring your text book, notes and any
homework that you are working on. Bring your Villanova Wildcard with you too.
You will need that to check in.
Why do I need to bring
my Villanova Wildcard with me, when I come for math help?
We scan your wildcard for attendance purposes. When we do
this we are recording your name, social security number, and the current date
and time. We then enter the number of the course that you are taking and your
professor's name. This information is only used for statistical purposes.
This way we know how many students are using our services, when demand is the
greatest and the least, how frequently we tutor each math course and for which
professors.
Does my professor know
if I come to the MLRC?
We do not supply professors with the names of students who
use the MLRC unless they specifically request that information (some professors
like to give extra credit when their students go to the math center).
What other resources
does the MLRC offer besides tutoring?
We have a modest computer lab with approximately 12 working
computers. These computers are installed with mathematical software (Maple,
Minitab, SAS, Excel) as well as mathematical tutorial software (see the
Resources section for
a complete list of tutorial software for Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus and
Statistics). We also have a video library containing lecture series for
Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry and Probability. Students may view these video
lectures in the MLRC or sign them out overnight.
