Ever since the Auguste and Louis Lumière held the first private
screening of moving images in Paris in 1895, cinema has long been a
vital part of culture of the French-speaking world. Villanova's
program in French and Francophone Studies maintains this tradition by
offering a series of French-language films.
Organized by the Cercle français, or French Club, these films —
usually three or four per semester — are open to the entire Villanova
community, and they are always in French, with English subtitles. They
represent the rich diversity of the "septième art" by showing films
from all over the French-speaking world, from classics of France's
"nouvelle vague" to recent releases.
Below you will see titles and posters of a few recent films; don't
hesitate to contact the Cercle français, to make requests, to help
organize film showings, and to lend your support to the greater
understanding of world cultures that comes from the cinematic
experience.
