The Spanish Club of Villanova University is open to all students of the university who wish to improve their command of the Spanish language and have the opportunity to experience its culture and traditions in different contexts. Membership in the Spanish Club is free and students of Spanish are especially welcome. The level of Spanish students have is not a barrier to become a member; anyone interested in broadening their cultural horizons or willing to improve and learn more about the language and traditions can become a member. Though the Spanish Club is a student organization, it is open to Villanova faculty and staff as well.

Our Activities

Some events the Spanish Club promotes:

  • the Film Series
  • lectures dealing with Hispanic culture
  • field trips to museums, workshops, and theaters where shows, events or plays are in Spanish or about the Hispanic world
  • Poetry recitals  
  • Certamen de declamacion en español (Poetry reading contest)
  • Salsa and Tango dance lessons
  • social gatherings and parties
  • Initiation at Sigma Delta Pi (National Collegiate Hispanic Honor Society)

During the Spring 2009 semester, members had the opportunity to attend the following activities every other week:

  • The Film Series:
  • “Valentin" (comedy, Argentina)
  • "Calle 54" (documentary, Spain)
  • "Extasis" (thriller, Spain)
  • "Te doy mis ojos" (drama, Spain)
  • Lectures: “Study Abroad program in Spain” by Professor Salvatore Poeta; “Study Abroad program in Chile” by Professor Carlos Trujillo.

EVENTS 2009-2010

FALL 2009 SEMESTER

October 22, 2009 - Celebration of the Dia da la Hispanidad.  Radnor/St. David's Room, Connelly Center, 6:30-8:30.  With an exhibition of salsa and tango dancing. Refreshments will be served.

November 2, 2009 - A Night of Poetry in Spanish. St. Augustine 300, 6:30-8:30.  With a readings by graduate students and faculty from the Spanish Department, and encouraging audience participation.  Refreshments will be served.

 

SPRING 2010 SEMESTER

International Night.  Music, dance, cuisine and conversation in Spanish.

Segundo Certamen anual de declamacion de poesía. (Second Annual Poetry reading competition).  A contest with cash prizes.  Refreshment served.

The Spanish Club Leaders

The Spanish Club offers great opportunity for student leadership. It is a way to get students involved in campus life, to know people, to help the Hispanic community, and to learn and promote the Hispanic values and traditions. The Spanish Club is sponsored by the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures at Villanova University. The Faculty Advisor to the Spanish Club is Professor Aydé Pérez, while the Film Series Advisor is Professor José Luis Gastañaga.
