In addition to the College
core requirements and the three course sequence in the History of Philosophy, Philosophy
majors are required to take six upper-division
electives. Students may take two paths to the fulfillment of this requirement: the
Thesis Path and the Track Path.
The Thesis Path
On this path students treat five of the six required courses as "free electives" at least one of which must be an Advanced Seminar (
PHI 5000 - Adv Sem for Phil Majors
). The sixth course will be the thesis (course numbered PHI 6000) which serves as the focal point and goal of the student's course of study. Requirements for the thesis are worked out in consultation with a full-time member of the Philosophy Department faculty who serves as an advisor on the thesis project.
The Track Path
On this path students select a track from the six listed below which serves as the focal point and goal of the student's course of study. Of the six courses required to complete the major, students must take a minimum of three courses from the track and two Advanced Seminars (
