Students enrolled in the
M.A. theatre program undergo a rigorous course of study
that is a combination of both scholarly and practical approaches to theatre. The
program is designed for the student who is ready to deepen his or her understanding
of the scope and content of theatre and drama, from classic to contemporary and
from East to West.
To pursue the M.A. degree
in theatre or the Graduate Certificate in Practical Theatre, you must
have a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university with a
satisfactory academic record. Students holding degrees in the humanities
are qualified for admission to the program. Those holding degrees in
other fields may be accepted after having satisfied the graduate
committee that they have a particular aptitude or sufficient experience
for graduate study in the field of theatre. GRE scores are required for
all applicants.
A series of
core courses encompassing the history of theatrical production and
the theory, criticism, and analysis of dramatic literature supports a comprehensive
range of elective studies in acting, directing, design, and playwriting. The program
provides experience in the fundamentals of research, as well as several of the component
crafts of theatre, culminating in the final semester in a specialized study in a
selected artistic or research area.
The Master of Arts degree provides crucial tools for the developing theatre practitioner,
educator, or scholar. The experience and knowledge students achieve working on theatrical
productions combined with courses in dramaturgy, script analysis, and dramatic
literature allow them to embark on careers as actors, directors, stage managers,
playwrights, dramaturgs, administrators, teachers, and critics.
A minimum of 36 credit hours, plus practical participation in department productions,
are required for the degree. A comprehensive examination is given in lieu of a thesis.
The normal period of time required for study leading to the M.A. degree is four
semesters.
