Applicants for admission to the graduate program must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Specific program requirements are as follows:

Admission Requirements

M.A. in Theology: For admission to the M.A. program we ordinarily require that you have at least eighteen undergraduate credits in Theology or Religious Studies, and have at least a 3.0 (or higher) undergraduate grade point average (GPA). We also require the result of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE); a 500-700 word statement of your objectives in seeking the degree; an academic writing sample (if available); and three letters of recommendations from persons able to judge your academic potential. We will also consider your application if you majored in other fields or have a lower undergraduate GPA. If you are in your last year of undergraduate studies and have not completed your bachelor’s degree at the time of application, please provide a transcript of all courses completed with the understanding that the remaining courses and grades be also submitted as soon as the degree is completed. A final transcript must be submitted to the Graduate Dean's Office listing the degree received and the date the degree was conferred."

Application Submission Requirements

For the Master's Program, submit the following:

To the Office of Graduate Studies:

  • The completed application and fees.
  • Scores from their Graduate Record Examination (GRE).
  • Two official undergraduate transcripts.

To the Department of Theology and Religious Studies:

  • Three letters of recommendation.
  • A 500-700 word Statement of Objectives as to why you wish to apply
  • An academic writing sample (if available).

Complete Application

In order to insure a timely review, a complete application must be submitted. A complete application includes:

  1. Application for admission online or paper applicationPDF icon
  2. Program specific application requirements must be completed as defined by each graduate program.
  3. Non-refundable application fee of $50.* (payable to Villanova University)
  4. Official transcripts (two copies) of all previous college work (both undergraduate and graduate) sent directly to the Graduate Studies Office, by the Registrar of the Colleges or Universities involved.
  5. Letters of recommendation (3) forwarded directly to the Director of the program to which you are applying.
  6. GRE scores
  7. TOEFL scores for international students
  8. Financial Certification for international students needing an F1 Visa.

*fee waived for students with a Villanova degree

Deadlines

Applications are generally considered for fall admission. We use a rolling admission procedure, and accept applications for the following fall throughout the year.

For priority consideration, students applying for an assistantship, scholarship, or  financial aid should submit their  complete applications  before March 1 for the Fall Semester and November 15 for the Spring Semester.
