Preamble
Students may take the Language Examination in a modern or an ancient
language. The Department of Modern Languages
and Literature administers the modern Language Examination, the
Department of Humanities the
ancient Language Examination. The examination
schedule is published in the
Graduate Calendar.

Modern Language Examination
Graduate students taking the ancient language examination
1.
apply for the Language Examination by the published
date (see the
Graduate Calendar) at the
office of the
Department of Modern Languages, 303 St. Augustine Center.
Note: You must have a minimum GPA of 3.00 to be eligible to sit for the
Language Examination.
2.
The Department of Modern Languages facilitates the
examination.
3.
Students take the exam at the time announced by the
Department of Modern Languages.
4.
The examination is 3 hours in length, graded pass/fail,
and measures the ability to translate, with the aid of a dictionary, an
appropriately-selected passage reasonable in length in the language of the
examination.
5.
The modern languages faculty evaluating the translation
examination reports the results to the Office of Graduate Studies.

Ancient Language Examination
Graduate students taking the ancient language examination
1.
apply for the Language Examination by the published
date (see the
Graduate Calendar) at the
office of the Department of
Humanities, Room 304, St. Augustine Center.
2.
The Department of Humanities facilitates the
examination.
3.
Students take the exam on or within a week of the
day/time published in the Academic Calendar.
4.
The examination is 3 hours in length, graded pass/fail,
and measures the ability to translate, with the aid of a dictionary, an
appropriately-selected passage reasonable in length in the language of the
examination.
5.
The ancient languages faculty evaluating the
translation examination reports the results to the Office of Graduate
Studies (usually no later than 2 weeks after the examination).
