Declaring a Major

Studying Theology and Religion is an interdisciplinary venture. Therefore, we encourage and welcome Double Majors. To facilitate studies in diverse fields of inquiry, you may count up to two associated or related courses from the second Major toward fulfilling your Theology Major requirements.

Our department grants a Bachelor's degree in Theology and Religious Studies. You must declare the major during your sophomore year. We require a minimum GPA of 2.5 for acceptance. If you do not meet this requirement you may petition our Department Chair for acceptance into the program.

To declare a major, please come to our office in the Saint Augustine Center, Room 107. We will discuss with you all aspects of the program: requirements; program structure; course selection; and possibilities and opportunities for further studies in Theology (for example, our Five-Year Bachelor/Master's Degree Program).

Program Requirements

You fulfill the requirements for the Bachelor of Arts by taking the Introduction Course (THL 1050/51) plus 10 additional Theology and Religious Studies courses. These courses include 5 required courses, 4 elective courses, and 1 advanced seminar. This graphicshows you the timeline for taking each course.

Required Courses

We offer one of the required courses as a Research Seminar during your Junior or Sophomore year.

You may choose the 5 required courses from any of the courses listed here. The 5 required courses include

one course in Biblical Studies;

one course in Historical Studies;

one course in Theological Studies;

one course in Christian Ethics; and

one course in Religion.

Elective Courses

You may choose the 4 elective courses from any of our departmental offerings. Also, please consider the following possibilities.

You may develop a concentration. Simply take a minimum of 3 elective courses from one of the 5 areas listed above; the remaining 4th course is a free elective.

You may also select 1 elective course from another department that complements your program.

Are you interested in joining our 5-Year BA/MA program? You will need to take three graduate courses in place of three undergraduate elective courses. Thus, we encourage you to fulfill the required courses before taking any elective course.

Note: THL 1050 - Christian Theology: An Intro or THL 1051 - Christianity in History do not fulfill the requirement for one of the 4 elective courses; they are required introduction courses and prerequisite of all other courses.

The Advanced Seminar ...

VU students take the Advanced Seminar ( THL 6500 - Advanced Seminar ) in their Senior year.
