The Arthur J. Ennis Fellowships in the Augustine and Culture: The Villanova
Seminar Program were established in 1994 by the College of Liberal Arts and
Sciences. The Fellowships are named for Father Arthur J. Ennis, O.S.A.
(1922-1994), a noted scholar of the history of the Augustinian Order and former
chair of Villanova University’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies
from 1968 to 1977. Father Ennis received his B.A. degree form Villanova
University, the Masters in Medieval History from The Catholic University of
America, and his doctorate in Church History at the Gregorian University in
Rome.
Fr. Ennis’ priestly career was spent entirely in education. He taught at
Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. and later employed his
expertise in Church History by teaching at the College of Santa Monica, in Rome,
Italy, the Augustinian College, in Washington, D.C., and at Villanova
University. He also served as Assistant General for North America for the
Augustinian Order.
Father Ennis' contribution to the scholarship of the Augustinian Order have been
impressive. In addition to editing three volumes on the History of Augustinian
Order, published by The Augustinian Historical Institute of Villanova
University, Father Ennis translated from Spanish The Augustinian in the Middle
Ages 1256-1356, by David Gutierrez and published numerous works of his own.
Among his works are: Contributions Made to Humanistic Studies in Early Mexico by
Fray Alonzo de la Vera Cruz, O.S.A.(1507-1584); Fray Alonzo de la Vera Cruz, O.S.A., 1507-1584: A Study of His Life and His Contribution to the Religious and
Intellectual Affairs of Early Mexico (1957); Old St. Augustine's Catholic Church
in Philadelphia: Historic Shrine Established in A.D. 1796 (1965); The
Augustinians: A Brief Sketch of Their American History from 1796 to the Present
(1985); Augustinian Religious Professions in Sixteenth Century Mexico: A Study
of the Earliest Records of Augustinian Friars Professed in the New World (1986);
and No Easy Road: The Early Years of the Augustinians in the United States,
1796-1874 (1993).
The Fellowship:
- Each is a one-year fellowship renewable for up to three years. These
positions are available as of August 15, 2008.
- Each holder of the fellowship will teach three courses each semester in
the College of Arts and Sciences Villanova Center for Liberal Education
(VCLE). The VCLE is a writing-intensive interdisciplinary seminar program
required of all first year students.
- Ennis fellows will contribute to Villanova’s residential learning
communities and to curriculum and faculty development in Core Humanities.
To Apply:
- Candidates must have a Ph.D. in a Humanities discipline, a strong
commitment to undergraduate teaching in the Humanities, and an interest in
teaching the thought of Augustine and its influence.
- Candidates with an interest in Hebrew Scriptures and the New Testament
are also encouraged to apply.
- Candidates must submit an unofficial undergraduate and graduate school
transcripts, three letters of recommendation, and a writing sample, in
