The Arthur J. Ennis Fellowships

The Arthur J. Ennis Fellowships in the Augustine and Culture: The Villanova Seminar Program were established in 1994 by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Fellowships are named for Father Arthur J. Ennis, O.S.A. (1922-1994), a noted scholar of the history of the Augustinian Order and former chair of Villanova University’s Department of Theology and Religious Studies from 1968 to 1977. Father Ennis received his B.A. degree form Villanova University, the Masters in Medieval History from The Catholic University of America, and his doctorate in Church History at the Gregorian University in Rome.

Fr. Ennis’ priestly career was spent entirely in education. He taught at Archbishop Carroll High School in Washington, D.C. and later employed his expertise in Church History by teaching at the College of Santa Monica, in Rome, Italy, the Augustinian College, in Washington, D.C., and at Villanova University. He also served as Assistant General for North America for the Augustinian Order.

Father Ennis' contribution to the scholarship of the Augustinian Order have been impressive. In addition to editing three volumes on the History of Augustinian Order, published by The Augustinian Historical Institute of Villanova University, Father Ennis translated from Spanish The Augustinian in the Middle Ages 1256-1356, by David Gutierrez and published numerous works of his own. Among his works are: Contributions Made to Humanistic Studies in Early Mexico by Fray Alonzo de la Vera Cruz, O.S.A.(1507-1584); Fray Alonzo de la Vera Cruz, O.S.A., 1507-1584: A Study of His Life and His Contribution to the Religious and Intellectual Affairs of Early Mexico (1957); Old St. Augustine's Catholic Church in Philadelphia: Historic Shrine Established in A.D. 1796 (1965); The Augustinians: A Brief Sketch of Their American History from 1796 to the Present (1985); Augustinian Religious Professions in Sixteenth Century Mexico: A Study of the Earliest Records of Augustinian Friars Professed in the New World (1986); and No Easy Road: The Early Years of the Augustinians in the United States, 1796-1874 (1993).
