Writing is one of the most difficult tasks for a college student, whether
you're an incoming freshman or an outgoing graduate student. We, the peer tutors
of the Villanova Writing Center, are your classmates; we eat lunch with you
every day, we sit next to you in class, and we're responsible for handing in the
same papers and assignments as you. Most importantly, we understand how
demanding the writing process is, and we're confident we can lend you a hand
with yours. We're here six days a week ready and willing to serve your writing
needs, whether it's brainstorming a new topic, revising a first draft, or
putting the finishing touches on a final draft, we'll take you through every
step of the process.
We encourage you to come to the Writing Center at any stage
of your writing process. You don't need to have a formal draft with you, feel
free to bring in an outline, or bring in a disk and work on our computers with a
peer tutor. However, we do ask that you bring in your assignment for your peer
tutorial, and simply give us 50 minutes of your time. Although we can't
guarantee an "A" on every paper, we can guarantee, by the end of your 50 minute
session, you'll come away more confident with your writing process, and feel
more comfortable using your writing skills for any future assignment at
Villanova. As Stephen North best put it, our main goal in the Writing Center is
to "produce better writers, not better texts." To do so, we try very hard to
provide the most comfortable and relaxed atmosphere to work on your writing
process.
Representatives from All Four Colleges
We're not all English majors in the Writing Center. Our peer tutors come from
a variety of majors throughout the Villanova curriculum; we're representatives
from all four colleges here at the University. We're excited to welcome all
members of the Villanova community to use the Writing Center as a valuable and
free resource. We, the peer tutors have worked hard and trained an entire
semester to be the most sympathetic, non-judgmental, and supportive listeners
for your texts and writing concerns. Our flexible, non-directive approach will
enable you to take control of your session and take responsibility for your
paper.
We're not responsible for grading your papers, nor will we pass judgment
on a professor's grade. We in the Writing Center operate under Villanova's
academic integrity policy. Our tutorials are student-centered and require a
collaborative effort; it takes two people to make a session successful in the
Writing Center. Contrary to the popular misconception, the Writing Center is not
a proofreading service or fix-it shop. If you're concerned with grammar, we can
teach you ways to fight through all your grammar difficulties. Most importantly,
it's up to you to give us a call (519-4604) and schedule your appointment.
There's an eager and energetic group of students over in Old Falvey waiting to
help you with your writing!
