Women’s Studies promotes collaborative and cooperative models of learning and pedagogy. This empowers students by giving them a voice and a sense of identity and by offering them ways to work for change. The program helps students develop the skills needed to reason and argue competently and with respect for difference.  (To read what students have to say about the importance of Women's Studies to their college experience, click here.)

What is Women's Studies?

  • Identifies gender as fundamental to the way that men and women understand themselves
  • Focuses on the position of women and causes us to rethink history and culture
  • Addresses the history and achievement of women
  • Analyzes the implications of gender roles in the past and present
  • Considers social and cultural consequences for both women and men of gender divisions and sex-role restrictions

The program involves students in the dynamic process of integrating the quest for knowledge with personal experience. Courses in the program value the knowledge and authority that students as well as teachers bring to the classroom. Course offerings, course content, and classroom methodologies all seek to encourage respect for difference and cultural diversity.

The Women’s Studies program at Villanova is integral to the implementation of the University’s mission. As part of a Catholic university, the program encourages the creation and celebration of an inclusive spirituality. It furthers the search for social justice. It seeks to foster every student’s potential. The program also seeks to help the University meet its goal of attracting and retaining a diverse student population. Women’s Studies forms an integral and essential part of the scholarly tradition of the academy.
