Philosophy and Mission Statement

The Women’s Studies Program at Villanova is an interdisciplinary program fostering student-centered learning. Women’s Studies encourages critical thinking about world views and studies toward gender. It challenges sex-biased generalizations and stereotypes, providing alternatives for thinking about the problems of the world and the contributions of its people.

Fundamental to the concept of a Women’s Studies program is an emphasis on interdisciplinary approaches. The theoretical origins and extensive literature of Women’s Studies form a rich foundation for all courses in the field. The curriculum stresses the exploration of theoretical and practical concepts of power, as applied to gender analysis and to all forms of oppression.

Women’s Studies courses prepare women and men to think critically of stereotypical gender roles. The program also seeks to create awareness of current and historical role models that can empower men and women students and promote gender equality.
