Every spring, the Gender and Women's Studies program organizes the Elizabeth Cady Stanton Conference to highlight and celebrate the incisive work produced by students from all across campus during the previous year. It features a number of panels where both undergraduate and graduate students present their work, as well as a keynote address from an invited scholar.

The 20th Annual Conference: Thursday, March 19, 2009

In 2009, the 20th Annual Elizabeth Cady Stanton Conference will take place on Thursday, March 19, and it will feature a keynote address by Linda Greenhouse, the Supreme Court reporter for The New York Times.

  3. papers written by graduate students (12-30 pages of text)

Submission Requirements

Eligibility for Submission

To be eligible for submission:

  • A paper must engage gender theories; a paper written about women or a woman is not sufficient.

For example, a paper might use a lens which distinguishes actions and reactions caused by gender prejudice, critically discuss the ways that gender functions in some aspect of society, or analyze a text using other elements from feminist theory.

  • With the exception of those written by first year students, all papers must include outside sources in a bibliography or reference section.
  • Essays should be formatted in Word, using 12 pt. Times New Roman font with 1 inch margins, and page numbers.
  • Please include a cover sheet with the following information: student's name, major and year of graduation; mailing and email addresses and phone number; and the name of the course and professor for which the paper was written (if any).
  • Marks of identification should not appear anywhere else in the paper.
  • All papers must be written during the past calendar year, from Spring or Fall or written specifically for the competition itself.
  • Students are expected to present their paper, in person, during the conference.
  • Please submit 4 paper copies to the Gender and Women's Studies Secretary (Jessica DeLisi) in the Global Studies Office, Old Falvey 204.
  • In addition to the paper copies, email the Word document to gws@villanova.edu

For any questions that you may have about the papers or the conference, please contact us at gws@villanova.edu.

The deadline for submission for 2009 papers is Friday, February 20 at 4pm.
