Student Managed Funds

Student Managed Funds (SMFs) offer VSB students an exciting way to gain valuable real-world experience and apply a wide range of financial theories. Through Villanova’s two SMFs—Arnone-Lerer and George Coleman—undergraduate and graduate students run a real investment company in real time with real money.

In 2006, Villanova students gained national recognition when the student-managed Arnone-Lerer Socially Responsible Investment Fund outperformed the S&P 500. Besides making money, the success of the fund demonstrated that ethics-based investing—such as avoiding tobacco and pornography companies—can be a viable financial strategy. In this area and many others, Villanova integrates our proud Augustinian values into tangible business situations.

The Wall Street Journal
July 2006 article featuring Villanova
"While university professors argue in the academic literature over whether socially responsible investing (SRI) outperforms or underperforms, a group of Villanova students has stepped outside the ivory tower to test SRI with real money in a student-managed fund. Their findings? SRI outperforms.”
