Center Hosts Silvio Gabriel, Executive Vice President and General
Manager of Malaria Initiatives at Novartis
On March 24, 2009, the Center hosted Silvio Gabriel, Executive Vice President and General
Manager of Malaria Initiatives at Novartis. Mr. Gabriel has direct responsibility for managing
the Novartis initiative on malaria and his responsibilities encompass all aspects of the anti-malarial drug Coartem from development, production and supply to marketing, life cycle management
and alliance management with external stakeholders to ensure supply of this lifesaving drug to
millions of patients. During his visit, Mr. Gabriel spoke to students in several International
Business classes about the role of corporate social responsibility and the Novartis initiatives.
Later in the day, he also spoke with members of the student organizations the International
Business Society and Business without Borders.
Center Hosts David Griffith, Endowed Chair in Global Marketing at Michigan State University
On March 16, 2009, the Center, in conjunction with the Center for Marketing and Public Policy,
hosted David Griffith as its 2009 Distinguished Visiting Scholar. Mr. Griffith presented “Emerging
Themes in International Marketing” as well as his recent research findings. Mr. Griffith is The
John William Byington Endowed Chair in Global Marketing at Michigan State University, Director of
the PhD Program in Marketing, and Associate Professor of Marketing at Michigan State University.
He is also Editor of the American Marketing Association's Journal of International Marketing.
Center Hosts Dave Stangis, Vice President of Corporate Responsibility at Campbell
On March 12, 2009, the Center hosted Dave Stangis, Vice President of
Corporate Responsibility at Campbell. Mr Stangis is responsible for designing Campbell's overarching CSR strategy, including
its efforts to promote environmental sustainability. Working closely with senior leaders, Mr.
Stangis oversees the development of CSR goals, policies and programs for the company. He has
significant experience in corporate social responsibility, having worked in the Environment, Health
and Safety (EHS) or CSR fields for more than 20 years. During his visit, Mr. Stangis spoke with the
students of the Global Corporate Social Responsibility course.
Center Hosts John Stoner, Principal at McKinsey & Company
On February 24, 2009 the Center hosted John Stoner, a Principal who joined the Cleveland office
of McKinsey & Company in 1998 upon his retirement from the United States Army. Stoner and Center
Director Jonathan Doh spoke to students in a special course offering focused on the challenges of
managing in the "post-bailout" economy. Mr. Stoner is a leader in McKinsey’s Operations, Public
Sector, and Transportation & Logistics practices, and has served a diverse portfolio of client
companies on operations topics since joining the Firm. Among his core clients are the U.S.
Department of Defense, one of the world’s largest airlines, a leading waste management company, and
one of the North American Class I railroads. Mr. Stoner is a member and incoming Chair of the
Center for Global Leadership Advisory Council.
Center Hosts Ron Cruse A&S '77, Chairman & CEO of Logenix International and Author of "Lies, Bribes, &
Peril: Lessons for the Real Challenges of International Business"
On February 4, 2009, the Center and the International Business Society co-hosted Ron Cruse,
Chairman & CEO of Logenix International and author of Lies, Bribes, & Peril: Lessons for
the Real Challenges of International Business. Mr. Cruse spoke about the lessons he developed from his
extensive experience in many challenging business environments, such as Russia, Zimbabwe, Pakistan,
Nigeria, and Afghanistan. He has founded and sold several businesses globally and is currently
assisting in the rebuilding of Afghanistan, the reconstruction of Iraq, and is an integral
facilitator supporting health and humanitarian assistance efforts across Africa and Asia. Mr. Cruse
graduated from Villanova University in 1977.
Center Hosts Sea-Jin Chang, Author of "Sony vs. Samsung"
On October 23, 2008, the Center hosted Professor Sea-Jin Chang, author of Sony
vs. Samsung: The Inside Story of the Electronics' Giants Battle for Global Supremacy (Wiley, 2008).
Professor Chang, who is the Kumho Asiana Endowed Chair Professor of Strategy and International Business
at Korea University, Visiting Professor at the Wharton School of Business, and editor of the Journal of
International Business Studies, shared insights from this book and his many years of research on business
strategy and competition in Asia.
Center Sponsors Faculty Visit to Rwanda
On July 27, 2008, Debra Arvanites, a faculty member and Associate Dean at VSB, traveled to Rwanda with
other Villanova faculty and administrators in conjunction with Catholic Relief Services (CRS). The delegation spent nine days in Rwanda, visiting programs carried out by CRS in partnership
with other agencies and meeting with government officials, church leaders, and
many Rwandans struggling to come to terms with their country’s troubled past. Debra has brought the experience into the classroom for the benefit of her service-oriented management
students. The Savings and Internal Lending Community program (SILC), a microfinance program observed in
Rwanda, exists to help women gain economic independence and has served as an example of business and
self-managed teams for the students in Arvanites’ class.
Center Provides Grant for Faculty Travel to China
Professor Wen Mao, who oversees VSB’s China programs, included visits to potential university partners
in Shanghai, Beijing, and Dalian during her Summer 2008 visit to China.
Center Supports Student Participation in Business Ethics Fortnight
In conjunction with the Corporate Social Responsibility Strategic Initiative Group (CSR SIG), we
supported a team of students who competed in the Business Ethics Fortnight, an annual case competition
at Loyola Marymount University, in which student teams present their perspective on a critical ethical
issue or dilemma. This was the 4th year the Center has sponsored a team.
Center Provides Grant for Faculty Travel to India
During the week of March 10, 2008 Dr. Ken Taylor, Associate Director of the Center, met with faculty
and administrators at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), School of International Studies, Delhi; Kalinga
Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), School of Management, Bhubaneswar; and the Foundation for
Organizational Research and Education (FORE), School of Management, Delhi to explore potential
collaboration with VSB on undergraduate and graduate programs.
Center Supports International Trip to Brazil
Also during March 2008, VSB Assistant Dean for Graduate Programs Simone Pollard and Professor Scott Newbert traveled to Brazil with a group of MBA students. While there, Director Pollard met with a
number of Brazilian business schools to discuss potential collaborations.
Center Supports Faculty Participation in Faculty Development in International Business (FDIB) Education Program
During January 2008, Professor Peggy Chaudhry participated in a Faculty Development in International
Business (FDIB) educational program in India. Sponsored by the Centers for International Business
Education and Research (CIBER), this faculty study abroad program provided participants with an
opportunity to experience first-hand the business environment of New Delhi, India.
Center Sponsors Two International Service Initiatives
During Spring Break 2008, CGL sponsored a service trip to San Jose, Costa Rica focused on sustainable
human development. Students worked in a local high school to teach English, assist teachers, and help the
community. Afternoons were spent learning about the economic and political forces affecting the county,
education system, and daily lives of the Costa Rican people.
During Winter Break 2007/2008, CGL provided financial support for an international mission trip to
Cape Town, South Africa in which Villanova students worked with children at Baphumelele’s Children Home
in Khayelitsha, an orphanage for children with HIV/AIDS.

Center Sponsors Faculty Travel to Russia
In Fall 2007, Professor Jeffrey Hahn traveled to Moscow to discuss potential collaboration between
Villanova and the Higher School of Economics at Moscow State University.
Center Hosts Peter Drysdale, East Asia Economies Expert
On November 13, 2007 the center, along with co-sponsors, hosted Peter Drysdale, Professor Emeritus of
Economics at Australian National University. Drysdale is credited with helping to launch the Asia
Pacific Economic Cooperation Forum (APEC) in 1989, the only regional forum in East Asia today that
pursues trade and financial harmonization and liberalization and includes the United States. Drysdale
visited informally with VSB faculty at a luncheon held in his honor, and then later presented a lecture
on "The Rise of Asia and its Impact on America."
Center Hosts Research Presentation on Multinationals and Violent
Conflict Resolution
On November 2, 2007, the center hosted a research presentation and discussion of the role of multinationals
in resolving violent conflicts. Jennifer Oetzel of American University discussed how multinational
enterprises and their subsidiaries can respond to violent conflict in the host countries where they
operate, and how the characteristics of the firm affect the types of intervention strategies that MNEs
may adopt.
