The objective of the Villanova School of Business Executive MBA program is to develop and transform you from an emerging executive leader into an effective executive leader—one who consistently creates value for his or her organization by:

  • identifying critical, complex, interdependent decision situations that cross multiple functional areas;
  • developing effective, innovative strategies for action;
  • leading the implementation of the selected strategy.

Many successful executive leaders have developed the knowledge, skills, and attributes that account for their success largely by chance—being in the right place, at the right time, and having the right opportunities. But leadership strategies and succession plans that leave success to chance are risky for both the individual and the organization. A more strategic and dedicated approach—supported by an Executive MBA program designed specifically to contribute to this process—offers far greater likelihood of success.

Systems Thinking

Through our integrated, systems thinking-based curriculum, the Villanova School of Business Executive MBA program plays a key role in the development of effective, successful executive leaders. Systems thinking is a way of conceptualizing, acting, and motivating others that enables effective executive leadership.

In decision situations, systems thinking enables you to look at an entire situation with all of its interdependencies and complexities. You’ll learn to simplify the complex, so the essence of the decision situation can be understood in its proper context. And you’ll learn to design new, innovative strategies for action; and lead their implementation. Systems thinking is a practical, applied approach, grounded in theory and proven over time in application. It can be learned, and—with practice—mastered. It is the foundation on which our curriculum is built. In addition, our curriculum provides you with the relevant, foundational business information you need to be an effective executive leader.

Five Content Streams

Curriculum content is organized into five streams:

  • Strategy and Positioning
  • Leading Change and Managing People
  • Measurement and Performance Systems
  • Systems Thinking
  • Executive Coaching
Transformation occurs over an extended period of time. Therefore, the learning activities related to each stream are spread over 21 months. And since executive leaders are likely to be called upon to integrate multiple competencies when decision situations arise, the competencies related to a particular stream are integrated with those of the other streams throughout the program. Various types of activities provide opportunities for you to develop essential skills through guided application including:
  • Case Studies
  • Simulations
  • Practicums

Details of the key topics covered in our curriculum are shown in the curriculum chart.

“As an Executive MBA student, the opportunity to explore and address current business challenges with a highly motivated group of executives from different industries was invaluable. In the long term, the relationships developed with your classmates provide you with a personal board of directors that will last a lifetime.”
