Curricular Innovation

Faculty at VSB are nationally-recognized for their passion for teaching. The VSB emphasis on community—which is fundamental to Villanova's Augustinian tradition—requires a faculty body that is as committed to teaching as it is to research.

Increased donor support to the school and creative faculty reorganization at VSB have led to exciting curricular assessments and innovations, which are currently underway across all program levels. Finance faculty frequently turn to corporate partners—including Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch – and even take site visits to their offices—to receive direct feedback on the efficacy of VSB finance curricula and real-time suggestions for improvement. As such, VSB finance courses are agile and reflect content that is relevant to the industry—day by day, and week by week.

The heart of VSB finance education is the dynamic VSB Applied Finance Lab, one of the first and best of its kind in the nation. Due in large part to the cutting-edge nature of this lab, Villanova University is ranked the #15 "Most Wired" campus in the US by PC Magazine and The Princeton Review. The lab, which includes a simulated trading room, is designed to offer students the same real-time resources available to Wall Street traders.

Excellent data resources are provided, including CRSP/Compustat Merged, DRI/Global Insight, RiskMetrics, NYSE TAQ, SDC Platinum, OptionMetrics, Thomson 13F, Factset, Global Financial Data, Morningstar Direct, Argus, SNL Financial, IW Financial and other data resources. Most data are available via the WRDS portal. Additionally, our Applied Finance Lab houses 16 Bloomberg terminals. These resources are available to support faculty scholarship, teaching, and five student managed funds.
