HHAW Mission 2009
Father Ray Jackson's Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week (HHAW) is a campus-wide event grounded in a "preferential option for the poor."
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week seeks to raise awareness in the Villanova community about hunger and homelessness within the United States and around the world. Through education, service, and advocacy, we are committed to promoting solidarity with the poor by gaining an understanding of the issues of poverty. Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week is motivated by the belief in the inherent dignity of all people and our responsibility to uphold the common good of society.

HHAW History
Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week originated at Villanova in 1975 and has since expanded nationwide.Villanova is proud to sponsor the oldest HHAW week in the country.
In 1975, Fr. Ray Jackson, OSA, and some committed Villanova students recognized the power of education and held the first HHAW. This week of coordinated activities has since become the most widely organized hunger and homelessness event on campuses nationwide. Across the United States, more than 500 campuses and communities participate by organizing educational programs, fasts and sleep outs, community service events, letter-writing campaigns, and congressional call-in days.
In 2002, the National Student Campaign Against Hunger and Homelessness presented Villanova with the National Build a Movement Award for its groundbreaking work.
HHAW seeks to:
- Raise awareness about global poverty, hunger and homelessness.
- Fundraise for international relief and development organizations.
- Provide an opportunity for Villanova students to combine education with action.
- Promote a deeper understanding of what it means to live out the Gospel and the Augustinian values of peace and justice.
