Classroom Presentations:
Education is the cornerstone for lasting change and members of this committee
will be credited for facilitating a large portion of this change. Specifically,
members will create 5, 10, and 20 minute presentations on hunger and
homelessness on a local and worldwide level and coordinate student volunteers to
present these and other presentations to participating classrooms. Through this
experience, members will gain valuable knowledge around the issues of hunger and
homelessness and share this information with their fellow students, faculty, and
visitors.
Fair Trade:
The Fair Trade committee is responsible for organizing and running the craft
sale during Hunger and Homelessness week. This includes contacting a Fair Trade
craft supplier as well as gathering educational materials on Fair Trade to
display to the Villanova community at the sale to further promote justice. The
chairs will also need to coordinate with a fair trade t-shirt supplier to create
the t-shirts to be worn during Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week.
Sleep Out:
The Sleep Out committee hosts an on-campus sleep out to expose the conditions of
the homeless and to help Villanovans open up their hearts to discuss the
struggles faced by the poor.
Hunger Banquet:
The Hunger Banquet committee plans and organizes a meal where each attendee is
assigned a role varying from the poorest status to the wealthiest and then
everyone dines together. This event strives to highlight the obvious
disparities among these groups and stress how hunger affects our global
population.
Worship:
The Worship committee helps make the VU community more sensitive to the major
social problems of homelessness and hunger, and help Christians and
non-Christians alike to unite & resolve these issues through the example of
Jesus. Students will spiritually connect with the impoverished through prayer
services and reflection, and offer the prayers of the poor up to God.
Public Relations:
The PR committee will oversee the design and production of all flyers,
brochures, press releases, banners and other related advertising materials. They
will also be responsible for communicating with other campus organizations and
staff regarding their participation in HHAW.
Food Drive:
The Food Drive committee collects cans and non-perishable foods around campus
and in the surrounding community to donate to a local food pantry and help
alleviate hunger in the Philadelphia area. This committee will also be in charge
of running a winter clothes drive and coordinating the Turkey Drive on campus.
Hunger Run:
The Hunger Run committee organizes and implements a 5K run on-campus to raise
money for CRS and Oxfam. Duties include formulating an effective advertising
strategy, enrolling participants, planning day-of activities, coordinating
runners and ensuring event safety.
Fast Day:
The Fast Day committee coordinates the largest fundraiser of the
week—encouraging Villanova students to act in solidarity with the poor of the
world by giving up their lunch meal for one day. For each meal donated by a
student, Dining Services will make a $6 donation to Oxfam. Collect as many
names as possible!
