Applications for new liturgical ministers are accepted at the beginning of
the Spring semester of each academic year. Training for new ministers occurs
over several sessions in the Spring semester and new minister are commissioned
and begin serving in the latter half of that semester.
Applications are accepted in the Spring so as to allow new students an
opportunity to become full, active, and conscious participants in the ministry
of the assembly in the Sunday evening worshipping community. The ministry of the
assembly is the primary ministry of the liturgy. This ministry calls each person
at Mass to fully celebrate the liturgy, with the gathered community, through
prayer and song.
New ministers are selected based on two main criteria:
- Opportunity to serve at Villanova in the future
- Strength of articulation of motivation to serve as a liturgical minister
as presented in the application
Accordingly, students closer to graduation are given a degree of preference.
Due to an overwhelming interest in the liturgical ministry program, Campus
Ministry cannot accommodate the volume of students who apply to serve as
lectors, Eucharistic ministers, and ministers of hospitality. If all students
who applied where scheduled to serve at the Sunday Masses, student ministers
would serve so infrequently that the meaning of the ministry would be
significantly diminished. Because of this, some students who apply to serve are
deferred for one year and then welcomed into the program the following spring
semester.
