Spring 2008 Mission Service Site Listing and Descriptions
- Bronx, New York
Volunteers will participate in the work of the
Augustinian Volunteers in an ethnically diverse parish. A small group, 8-11
people, will work at a soup kitchen, homeless shelter, a women’s shelter, a
tutoring program, and an immigration center. Volunteers can also work at an
after school program and have the opportunity to experience the poverty in our
own backyard. You will examine the causes of inner city poverty and the
devastation of the lives of those who are born into poverty. This is a wonderful
community to work with and you can also continue your work through weekly
volunteering after your experience.
The cost is about $200-300 and is open to 11
people.
- Chicago, Illinois
Participants will spend the week working alongside the
volunteer teachers of Chicago’s Inner-City Teaching Corps program. The
Inner-City Teaching Corps trains recent college graduates to serve as full-time
teachers in under-resourced, inner-city parochial schools, while living in
faith-based communities and taking graduate courses at Northwestern University.
As a spring break service trip participant, you will have the opportunity to
work with individuals and small groups of students within the classroom, and
develop/facilitate after-school activities within the school. This experience
aims to provide you with a first-hand look at the educational inequities in
urban communities, and various on-going efforts to empower children in the most
under-served areas of Chicago.
The cost is about $500 and is open to 12 people

- Philadelphia, Pennsylvania
During this action-packed week, you will hear
from low-wage and immigrant service workers (hotel, food service or laundry
workers) who are struggling to make ends meet in Philadelphia, reach out to
workers about their rights in the workplace and remedies for challenging unjust
working conditions, and participate in at least one direct action (such as a
rally or prayer vigil) in support of workers. You will hear and learn about
sweatshops “in your own backyard” and how you and others can make a difference.
Combine an urban plunge, social justice action and overview of Catholic Social
Teaching all in one week’s experience. Participants will stay at the Augustinian
Volunteer house in Philadelphia, cooking and eating all meals together.
The cost
is about $150 and is open to 12 people.

Fall 2007 Habitat Sites
The leading cause of homelessness and a
major reason for hunger is the high cost of the U.S. housing. The
average hourly wage needed to rent a two-bedroom dwelling in the U.S. is
$12.47 per hour while the minimum wage is only $5.15. Housing is
considered affordable if it consumes less than 30% of a family’s income.
If you choose to participate in Habitat for Humanity site you will be
helping to build low-income, affordable housing. Habitat for Humanity is
an international organization that builds homes or rehabilitates homes
for the working poor. HFH relies on volunteer labor and donations to
sustain its services. Each family who applies for a house must commit to
hundreds of hours of labor and will receive a home with a no-interest
mortgage that is adjusted to the family’s income. You will be building
for 4 ½ - 5 days and building skills are not necessary. Hopefully you
will get to know the family for whom you are building, but this is not
guaranteed. When you are not building, the week is focused on spending
time with your group as well as reflecting on the culture, work and
experiences you encounter. Reflection times provide an opportunity to
discuss the moments that raise questions, touch your heart, and
challenge or confirm your beliefs about the world, the poor and
yourself.
The cost of the trip includes airfare (if applicable), van rental, room
and board, donation to the Habitat affiliate, transportation to and from
the airport and a T-shirt. The total will depend on the location of the
affiliate.
Cost ranges from $300-800 depending on airfare and affiliate donation.

- Lexington, KY
- El Paso, TX
