Welcome to our Summer 2017 Newsletter! I hope you are enjoying the warmer weather with family and friends and finding time to feel refreshed and revitalized! Please take a few minutes to read the articles in this edition of our newsletter. In addition, please email me with comments or suggestions for upcoming newsletters. I would love to hear from you!

We are still working on the Fall calendar, which will be posted on our website later this summer. One BIG event to put on your calendar is the launch for the Anne Welsh McNulty Institute for Women's Leadership on October 26, 2017. The committee is working on several events for the day with a keynote speaker in the evening. Stay tuned!

Our "We're in the World" column continues this month, where we travel along the East Coast to Virginia. If you have suggestions for future editions please send them along.

Talent and Women's Professional Advancement
On June 14th The Washington Post published an article entitled "The big problem for Uber now: Attracting talent." The piece alluded to the firm's challenge in repairing its reputation for an "anything-goes, cutthroat" culture and allegations of inappropriate behavior towards women. The author underscored the need for the company's rehabilitation to address the challenge of attracting industry talent.

ON CAMPUS EVENTS

Joann Lublin, Management News Editor at The Wall Street Journal

On February 15, the Villanova Women's Professional Network along with the Undergraduate Women in Business Society hosted an event with Joann Lublin, Management News Editor at The Wall Street Journal and author of a recently published book, "Earning it: Hard Won Lessons from Trailblazing Women at the Top of the Business World." Before her speech to a larger audience, Joann met with a group of 15 women student leaders for a lively discussion on themes from her book. Afterward, Joann spoke to a crowd and hosted a Q&A followed by refreshments with an opportunity to purchase her signed book!

AAUW Work Smart Workshop

The VWPN facilitated an afternoon AAUW Work Smart Workshop on Sunday, February 26 in the Health Services Building. The AAUW Work Smart Wage Negotiation Workshops provide valuable information and skills on how to negotiate for a raise or promotion. The workshop was facilitated by Villanova's Katina Sawyer and the event was open to all. For more information and future workshop dates, please visit www.villanova.edu/vwpn.

Resiliency Workshop

The Villanova Women's Professional Network along with the Undergraduate Women in Business Society held a Resiliency Workshop on Thursday, March 16, led by Dr. Beth Weinstock and Dr. Jane Shure from The Resilience Group. Participants included alumnae, graduate and undergraduate students, faculty and staff. The focus of the workshop was "Strengthening Your Inner Coach to be Stronger than Your Inner Critic."

Brazen Virtual Networking Hour

On March 22, the Villanova Women's Professional Network along with the Villanova University Alumni Association and the MBA SA Women in Business Committee hosted a Brazen Virtual Networking Hour. Villanova women at all life stages networked and shared professional and personal advice. These virtual networking hours present opportunities to make connections with other Villanovans through brief "chat-roulette" style conversations - and continue the discussion with new connections after the event. No matter where you are in the world, you can sign in from your home, office, local library or mobile device. They are free, they are only for an hour and they are fun! We will be hosting more in the fall - stay tuned.

Strengthening Your Inner Coach to be Stronger than Your Inner Critic

Carol Mitchell, author of "Breaking Bitch: How Women Can Shatter Stereotypes and Lead Fearlessly," presented on "Strengthening Your Inner Coach to be Stronger than Your Inner Critic" to the Villanova University community. This event was open to all and was held on-campus on March 29 at Driscoll. Carol Vallone Mitchell, PhD cofounded Talent Strategy Partners, a talent management consulting firm.

Big East Networking luncheon

The VWPN, University Advancement, and the McNulty Women's Leadership Institute hosted a Big East Networking luncheon and panel in New York City as part of Big East Week on March 10. Our own Joyce Russell, PhD, Dean of the Villanova School of Business, moderated the panel, which included Catherine Keating, President and CEO, Commonfund ; Nnenna Lynch, Managing Principal and Director of Development, The Georgetown Company; Paula Sutter, Operating Partner, TSG Consumer Partners and CEO TSG Fashion; and Eileen Barker, GM Sales and IT Cosmetics. Villanova Women's Professional Network served dinner to families staying at The Ronald McDonald House once again

On Monday, June 5, the Villanova Women's Professional Network again served dinner to families staying at The Ronald McDonald House at Front & Erie in Philadelphia. A prepared dinner is a welcomed relief for families as they return from a long and often exhausting day at the hospital caring for their child. The dinner not only provides the families with a nutritious meal that might otherwise be skipped, but also creates an opportunity for families to interact with one another, share their stories, and learn from people who are in similar situations.
