Welcome to the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering! We
represent a diverse field of endeavor to which this letter is intended to
provide an introduction. I will be describing some aspects of civil engineering,
in general, and of our programs, specifically. You will find much more detailed
information as you browse this website.
Civil Engineering is a “people-serving” profession. Civil engineers work to
improve the quality of life while protecting the environment. Civil engineers
analyze, plan, design, construct, and operate essential facilities such as dams,
bridges, buildings, highways, airports, harbors and offshore structures. They
are also involved with river and shore restoration and protection, watershed
management, clean water supply systems, and the treatment and disposal of waste
materials. Since these projects often affect large numbers of people, civil
engineers must also consider the social, political, and economic effects of
their work.
We can offer you many and varied opportunities within our Department and the
other programs within the University at large. Please feel free to contact me if
I can be of further assistance and, thank you for considering us in your search.
Best Wishes,
Ronald A. Chadderton, Ph.D., P.E.
