Graduate Program

The departmental evening graduate programs provide practicing professionals an opportunity to pursue advanced study on either a part-time or full-time basis. The programs maintain a balance between theory and application, stress modern engineering methods for the solution of detailed and complex problems, and emphasize the concepts of analysis and design coupled with engineering judgment.

Students may undertake a program in:

As noted below, a student in a Civil and Environmental Engineering graduate program may elect to pursue a Master of Science thesis. Students are encouraged, but not required, to write a thesis. Additionally the Water Resources and Environmental Engineering programs are offered through real time Distance Education.

All three graduate degrees in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering require a minimum of 30 earned semester credits of graduate work. A minimum of 21 graduate credits must be in Civil and Environmental Engineering courses. A Plan of Study must be approved by the advisor and chairperson prior to the completion of the student's initial semester of graduate study. For approval, the plan must indicate a topical focus and direction commensurate with a master’s program. Guided by his/her advisor, a student may select a Plan of Study consisting of:

  • thirty earned credits of graduate courses
  • a thesis track consisting of twenty-one earned credits of graduate courses, and a three-credit research/investigation course and a six-credit thesis
  • or twenty-seven earned credits of graduate courses, and a three-credit research/investigation course.

Certificate Program

A certificate program is  available for those who do not intend to earn the full degree. Students are also permitted to take up to two courses without applying as long as they demonstrate they meet the course prerequisites.
