The Environmental Microbiology and Biotechnology Laboratory is involved
in applied microbiology research. Specific interests are:
- Public health microbiology
- Biological processes for wastewater treatment
- Bioremediation
- Solid and hazardous waste management
- Water quality control
Since its establishment in Fall 2002, the Environmental Microbiology
and Biotechnology Laboratory has trained numerous undergraduate and
graduate students in those areas and provided scientific and technical
support to local agencies and industry through research.
Recent Research Projects Include:
- Microbial source tracking by FAME profiling of indicator
organisms
- Effects of natural enzymes and plant-based materials on
anaerobic digestion
- Changes in antibiotic resistance patterns of Escherichia coli
during wastewater treatment
- Quantification of viable pathogens in biosolids through gene
expression
Since 2002, a number external grants have been attracted for those
projects from federal, state, and private organization including: PA Department of Environmental ProtectionUS Geological SurveyBen Franklin Technology PartnersOrganica Biotech, Inc.Aventis-Pasteur, Inc.Villanova University Office of Research and Sponsored Projects.
